One Weary Wombat
Published in Paperback by Bandicoot Books (22 December, 1997)
Author: Steve and Marion Isham
Average review score:

Storybook of charming mammals to enchant kids as young as 1
This is actually a counting book, and certainly suitable well below the 4 to 8 year old classification given it. Wombat starts out at 10, with his 9 Tasmanian (Australia) mammal friends, and counts down through the activities of his day with animals dropping out until just one weary wombat is left. The story and characters are really enchanting, and would catch the eye of even a 1 year old, while the details to the story - lots of activity within each picture to study, pictures hidden within pictures, references to classic childrens' stories - can captivate older children and even adults. This book has been a smash hit in our household.

The Only Way to Learn About Relationships: Synastry Techniques
Published in Paperback by ACS Publications (01 June, 1992)
Authors: Marion D. March and Joan McEvers
Average review score:

A pretty good way to learn, but not the only way...
Published in 1992, this book is volume V of "The Only Way To Learn Astrology" series. However, the title is a bit of a misnomer in this case because the techniques in this book are definitely not the only way to learn about relationships, so the material is a bit dated. Nonetheless, the two authors McEvers and March (who is now deceased) are very lucid and insightful, so their books are a pleasure to read, and their astrology series is good for beginners. In this book you will be introduced to relationship analysis through the techniques of synastry and composite charts. However, the presentation of this subject is quite different here than in any other text that I've read.

The book begins by examining the individual chart and the individual's needs in a partnership. Hence, the text starts by discussing 1st house and 7th house needs through the twelve signs. The problem is that the actual analysis of these houses are revealed through examples rather than through clearly stated and in depth evaluations of the houses and the planets that are found therein. If you enjoy learning by example, then this approach will be great for you. In fact, the McEvers and March astrology series are fantastic resources for birth information on famous people (which was contributed by Lois Rodden, the owner of the largest data base on accurate famous births), so not only will you learn by example but you'll get accurate birth information for such people as Sophia Loren, Carlo Ponti, the 60's group The Doors, Princess Caroline, Princess Diana, et al. But at times I found myself wishing for more explanation and fewer examples; i.e. more depth. The overviews of the houses and themes connected with partnership were always very brief explanations followed by analysis of actual cases. Some of the examples were helpful, while other examples gave birth to more questions. In terms of presenting how chart analysis is done, this book is really great. However, if you need a step by step in depth explanation on how to do analysis, then you may feel only moderately satisfied with these authors' approach. All in all, I really like this book because it covers a lot of ground, and it's nice to explore astrology by example. I can't think of any other book that presents relationships in the way these authors do, so I would recommend this book as an innovative and frequently insightful approach worthy of adding to your collection, but I would not recommend this book as the only book for you to own on the topic of relationship analysis. I give this book five stars because it contains quite a bit of useful celebrity data, which is complete and accurate.

Paper Fun for Kids (Step-By-Step)
Published in Hardcover by Smithmark Publishing (August, 1994)
Authors: Marion Elliot and Marion Elliott
Average review score:

Get kids involved in a skill; they'll always remember it !
Children love to make things, and the skills they gain from creating are not only physical, but intellectual and emotional as well. In my first grade classroom, I have used this book extensively. The projects are appropriately challenging, which is an essential criteria for happiness as has been documented in the nonfictional book, Flow, and other psychology books. Each craft appeals to children. Crafters can make postcards, wrapping paper, frames, spinners for games, calendars, Christmas decorations, personal stationery, wall art, imitated stained class, wall paper borders, monster feet, animals, scenes for stories, a variety of fun masks, crowns, puppets, puzzles, books, albums, gifts for special occaisions, and more. The techniques needed are carefully explained and illustrated in a step-by-step process. Beautifully photographed pages accomodate the crafter so that the finished projects are visualized throughout the volume. This is a great book to be used at home, school, church, scouts, and anywhere else where creativity is fostered Crafting and artistic skills contribute to the feeling of contentment in all people. Confidence is enhanced by the process of doing and finishing projects. Instead of watching television, get out a craft book like this one and make things happen !

Paper Mache: Over 20 Creative Projects for the Home (The Inspirations Series)
Published in Hardcover by Lorenz Books (July, 1997)
Authors: Marion Elliot and Marion Elliott
Average review score:

A wonderful and creative introduction to papier mache!
Paper mache is *not* just covering a balloon with newspaper! I never dreamed of all the things you can do with it. This is a great book with projects that are inspiring, beautiful, and useful. This is a great craft because it's probably about the cheapest arty thing you can do - basically just cardboard and newspaper. I HIGHLY recommend this book!

Beautiful easy projects for kids & adults!
The projects in this book are all fun and also nice to look at. Unlike some kids' projects, these are things I wouldn't mind having around my house!

I checked the book out from the library and had it for a whole year before I realized I should buy myself a copy.

PARENT'S GUIDE TO 2ND GRADE

Authors: Peter W. Cookson and Marion Hess Pomeranc
Average review score:

Information on second grade that every parent needs to know.
As a single parent, this clear and concise bird's eye view into the second grade classroom helped me understand a lot about the challenges my son will face come September. Since I want to spend my downtime with my six-year-old on activities, not reading academic diatribes, this quick read struck just the right balance for this reviewer. Information packed, practical, and to-the-point--I recommend it highly.

PM 101 According to the Olde Curmudgeon: An Introduction to the Basic Concepts of Modern Project Management
Published in Paperback by Project Management Institute (September, 2000)
Author: Francis Marion Webster Jr.
Average review score:

Getting Started in Project Management
If you are new to the field of Project Management this book is very helpful. It draws upon the accepted practices of the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) but is written more for those who don't want to learn directly from a text book style reading. The story follows a character named Sam and how he deals with his first exposure to project management. The flow of the book is very smooth as it takes you from basically describing what a project is, through the skill sets required to be a successful PM, and finally to the development of a Work Breakdown Structures and project planning techniques. This is a great quick read for anyone interested in project management as a profession, or who uses project management skills in their day to day jobs but don't have any guidelines.

Portuguese: the Land and Its People
Published in Paperback by Penguin Books Ltd (31 October, 1991)
Author: Marion Kaplan
Average review score:

The Portuguese: The Land & Its People
This perceptive volume (1992) is one of the finest all-round books about the Portuguese people, and a first-rate travel-companion. Ranging knowledgeably from literature to the Church, from agriculture to emigrantes, its sympathetic feminine perspective seems appropriate for a country whose men so often seem to be abroad. Usefully updated in 1998.
